Do you have a favorite garment that fits you perfectly and would love to recreate it? Have some experience sewing and looking for a new challenge? Then this workshop is for you! Expert garment stitcher, Debbie Christensen of Bolt & Spool will walk you through copying your favorite clothes.
In this 4-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to copy your clothes by making a pattern from an existing garment that you already know fits you. You will leave the class with a perfectly fitted pattern and, if time allows, a completed test garment (called a muslin) ready to be made up as many times as you like and in all kinds of fabulous fabrics!
What you will learn: We’ll cover transferring seam lines and adding seam allowances; fitting details such as darts, tucks, and gathers; copying pockets and any other design details; writing out basic pattern instructions; and making up a muslin to check the fit.
Prerequisites: This workshop is not suitable for beginners. You’ll need to have made a few garments as well as have some basic construction skills prior to attending the course. Because of the limited time frame, we recommend you bring something that is not too complicated, such as a skirt, dress, or top (please no pants). Bring a few options to ensure we have a garment that works well for the class, or email Debbie prior to the class if you have questions. Also note that completing the muslin in class may not happen if the scale or complexity of the project exceeds the workshop time. However, you will definitely leave with the pattern ready to test at home.
What to bring: To make a muslin, please bring a few yards of inexpensive fabric in a material as close as possible in weight and drape to the fabric you intend to use for the final garment. If you are copying a knit garment, you will need knit fabric. This will let you test the fabric and see how it works in your pattern.
Purchasing Fabric: We have some quilting weight fabrics available at Studio How-To, but recommend Bolt & Spool in Little Italy for your final garment fabric purchases.
